Women vs Feminism
by
Joanna Williams
There's never been a better time to be a woman. Thanks to those feminists who fought for liberation, young women today have freedom and opportunities their grandmothers could barely have imagined. Girls do better at school than boys and are more likely to go to university. As a result, women are taking more of the top jobs and the gender pay gap has all but disappeared. Yet rather than encouraging women to seize the new possibilities open to them, contemporary feminism tells them they are still oppressed. Women vs Feminism: Why We All Need Liberating from the Gender Wars challenges this stance, unpicking the statistics from the horror stories to explore the reality of women's lives. It argues that today's feminism is obsessed with trivial issues - skinny models, badly phrased jokes and misplaced compliments - and focuses on the regulation of male behaviour, rather than female empowerment, pitching men and women against each other in a never-ending gender war that benefits no-one. Feminism today does women no favours and it's time we were all liberated from the gender wars.

Feminist Movement
by
Chris Bodenner
Should the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)--which states, Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged ... on account of sex--be added to the U.S. Constitution? The feminist movement had long argued that such an amendment was necessary to guarantee gender equality and end discrimination against women. Opponents, however, argued that the Constitution and laws enacted by Congress already ensured gender equality and that the ERA threatened traditional American society. Should the ERA be ratified? This eBook examines the ERA and the feminist movement, delving into the pro and con arguments that surrounded them. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, and a Learn More About chapter with more information on the topic.

Modern Slavery
by
Laura J. Lederer
This book provides a sobering look at modern-day slavery--which includes sex trafficking, domestic servitude, and other forms of forced labor--and documents the development of the modern anti-slavery movement, from grassroots activism to the passage of anti-slavery laws. Slavery was formally abolished across most of the world by the end of the 19th century, but it continues to lurk in the shadows of the modern world. As with slavery of yesteryear, modern slavery hinges on the exploitation of vulnerable populations--and especially women and children. The result is the same as in bygone centuries, when slavery was practiced in the open: unimaginable misery for those exploited and financial gain for the exploiter. Modern Slavery: A Documentary and Reference Guide is an invaluable resource for students, researchers, academics, policymakers, community leaders, and others who want to learn about modern-day slavery. Covering forms of modern slavery that include sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and domestic servitude, the book provides a complete examination of the modern-day anti-slavery movement. Its coverage includes historical antecedents, the various and sometimes opposing schools of thought about how to combat modern slavery, and the legislative processes that united them and resulted in a groundbreaking approach to combating human trafficking. The book uses primary source material, including survivor stories, witness testimony, case law, and other materials to discuss the nature and scope of modern-day slavery, the grassroots movement to stop it, and U.S. leadership in the international arena. Examples of primary source material include the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (2005); remarks and statements from Presidents Bush, Clinton, and Obama on human trafficking and modern slavery; the United Nations' Office of Drugs and Crime report, A Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (2009); excerpts from the U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report, including harrowing victims stories from around the world (2013 and 2014); and excerpts from 2015 Senate hearings, including testimony from Holly Austin Smith, trafficking survivor, and from Malika Saada Saar, Human Rights Project for Girls. Presents an accurate and comprehensive account of the size and scope of modern slavery in the United States and around the world Uses primary source materials to illuminate efforts by human rights organizations, lawmakers, and slavery survivors to combat human trafficking and rescue millions of men, women, and children from lives of backbreaking labor, forced prostitution, and other forms of enslavement Illustrates how early survivor voices catalyzed the new abolitionist movement--that the brave actions of a few have benefited thousands of victims of human trafficking

Encyclopedia of Women and Gender
by
Judith Worell (Editor)
The study of gender differences began in earnest in the 1970s and has since increased dramatically to infiltrate virtually all fields of study in the social and behavioral sciences. Along the way, it was discovered that while women very often think and behave differently than do men, industrialized societies cater to masculine perspectives. The "Psychology of Women" emerged as a field of study focusing on just those areas in which women most often butted against assumed roles. And similarly, in the 1990s, the "Psychology of Men" emerged to focus on the same issues for men. The Encyclopedia of Gender covers all three areas under one cover, discussing psychological differences in personality, cognition, and behavior, as well as biologically based differences and how those differences impact behavior. Coverage includes studies of these differences in applied settings such as education, business, the home, in politics, sports competition, etc.

Violence against Women : Impacts on Women's Health Derived from a U.S. Nationwide Study
by
Megan C. Stewart
ISBN: 9781593327545
Publication Date: 2014
Using data from the National Violence Against Women Study (NVAWS) and general strain theory (GST) as a theoretical basis, Stewart explores the impact of the victim-offender relationship on psychological and physical health and wellbeing for the crimes of rape, stalking, and physical assault. She asks two questions: first, what is the prevalence of violence against women by victim-offender relationship? and, second, what is the effect of the victim-offender relationship on health outcomes? Findings indicate that a variety of perpetrators are responsible for violence against women. Additionally, while victimization is related to negative health outcomes, the victim-offender relationship does not significantly contribute to increased odds of experiencing negative health outcomes.
Gender Attitudes and Violence Against Women
by
Melinda R. York
ISBN: 9781593326784
Publication Date: 2011
York seeks to answer the question of the extent to which traditional beliefs about gender or gender roles are associated with increased levels of sexual assault and/or domestic violence. She also investigates the extent to which social capital serves as a protective factor with respect to the safety of women. The prevalence of traditional gender attitudes predicted rates of violence against women, specifically sexual assault and domestic violence, while social capital serves as a mitigating factor. In counties with less social capital and more traditional gender attitudes, there were substantial increases in sexual and physical assaults inflicted upon women by men. These findings confirm the theoretical literature on patriarchy and socialization into gender roles.

Cómo hacer la revolución
by
Srdja Popovic
In recent decades, proliferated nonviolent movements have followed in the wake of Ghandi and Martin Luther King. Protests in Tahrir Square in Egypt, or the struggle of Buddhist monks in Burma show how organized and peaceful pressure can overthrow dictators and bloody regimes. But how do these movements begin? Is there a formula that facilitated the conquest of certain claims? In this amazing self-help manual for revolutionaries, neophytes are instructed through essential tasks: identify achievable goals, join the insurgents, keep calm and firm in all circumstances and, above all, always look for creative solutions.
